The Unionization Process
Step 1
- Talk one-on-one with trusted coworkers.
- Identify your core group of allies for the movement.
- Find the key issues you all share.
- Form your confidential organizing committee through non-workplace communication means.
Step 2
- Partner with a Teamsters Organizer for expert guidance for a tailored plan for your workplace.
- From here on out – You are not alone
- Launch your confidential card-signing campaign.
- Collect signed cards to prove employee support.
- Build a clear and undeniable majority.
Step 3
- The Organizer will submit your signed cards and a application for certification to the appropriate Labour Board, once enough Union cards are signed.
- A Vote is likely now ordered by the Labour Board to ensure Unionization is the will of the majority. This willl be a legally binding vote
- The Organizer will help with a “VOTE YES TO THE UNION” Campaign
Step 4
- The Union will help the employees select a employee bargaining committee.
- Survey members to set priorities for negotiations.
- Negotiate with management for a fair deal. This process is usually led by the Teamsters with the input directly from members of the bargaining committee actively taking part in the negotiations.
- Reach a tentative agreement on your first contract.
Step5
- Review the proposed contract with all members.
- Vote to accept or reject the tentative agreement.
- Ratify the contract with a final majority vote.
- Lock In your guaranteed rights and benefits.
