Frequently Asked Questions

The Teamsters Union can help you by providing enhanced job security, better wages and benefits, and improved working conditions through a collective bargaining agreement. We also provide a support system, ensuring workplace safety, fair treatment, and representation during disputes.

How the Teamsters can help you:

Collective bargaining: The union negotiates a collective agreement with your employer to secure improved wages, benefits, and working conditions that go beyond minimum legal standards.

Protection and representation: We provide legal and administrative support to ensure fair treatment and can help you navigate issues with your employer, from unfair discipline to safety concerns.

Improved benefits: Collective agreements often include better benefits such as health coverage, retirement plans, paid time off, and vacation time.

Job security: By having a collective agreement, you gain more job security, as your employer cannot change your pay, job description, or benefits at will.

Workplace safety: The union acts as a watchdog to enforce and improve health and safety standards in the workplace.

Voice in the workplace: Unions give workers a unified voice to address concerns and negotiate with management on issues like fair hours, overtime pay, and a harassment-free environment.

Support and resources: The union offers resources like educational materials, training, scholarships, and community support for members and their families.

What this looks like in practice
  • Grievance procedures: If a dispute arises, the union will represent you and follow the grievance procedure outlined in the collective agreement.
  • Community and solidarity: You become part of a larger network of workers, which provides solidarity and a collective voice for advocating for your rights.
  • Enforcement of laws: The union ensures that your employer complies with all labor laws, which can be difficult to enforce on your own

Becoming a Teamster has many benefits, such as better wages and benefits, improved job security, and a voice in the workplace through collective bargaining. Teamster contracts provide for higher pay, health insurance, retirement pensions, and protected working conditions, including reasonable hours and paid time off. Joining also means becoming part of a larger community that offers support and advocates for members’ rights.

Key benefits of joining the Teamsters

  • Higher wages and benefits: Teamsters negotiate for higher pay and a more comprehensive benefits package, which can include health insurance and paid time off.
  • Stronger job security: Union contracts provide protection against unfair treatment, layoffs, and unjust discipline.
  • Retirement security: Many Teamster members have access to pension plans that help provide a stable and secure retirement income
  • Improved working conditions: Through collective bargaining, the union secures more reasonable work hours and addresses other workplace concerns.
  • A collective voice: Joining a union gives you a voice in your workplace and a way to negotiate for fairness and advocate for your rights.
  • Support and community: The union provides a supportive community and resources, such as legal representation and educational opportunities, to help members and their families.

To become a Teamster, you can either join a company that already has a Teamsters union, or you and your coworkers can organize to form a new union at your current workplace.

Join an Existing Teamster Workplace

The most direct way to become a Teamster is to seek employment with a company where the workers are already represented by the union.

  • Find potential employers: Contact us at the Local Union or your nearest Teamsters Local Union and inquire about companies in your area that have union contracts and are currently hiring.
  • Apply for a job: Once hired, you will sign a membership card, at which point you become a union member.

Option 2: Organize Your Current Workplace

If you are already employed and wish to unionize your workplace, you can confidentially contact an Organizer with the Teamsters to start the organizing process.

  1. Contact an Organizer: Reach out to the nearest Teamsters Local Union office or use an online form on their website to be connected with a union representative or organizer.
  2. Form a Committee: With guidance from the organizer, you will help form an internal organizing committee with your coworkers to discuss workplace issues and build support.
  3. Sign Cards: The committee will gather signed membership cards from a majority of employees who wish to be represented by the union.
  4. File Application: The Teamsters representative will file an application for certification with the appropriate Labour Relations Board.
  5. Bargaining: If the application is successful (either through a vote or automatic certification), the union will become your official representative, and the process of negotiating your first collective bargaining agreement (contract) will begin.

Key Things to Know

  • Confidentiality: All information submitted to the Teamsters during the organizing process is strictly confidential, and your employer will not know you have reached out.
  • Legal Protections: It is illegal for an employer to intimidate, fire, or threaten an employee for discussing or organizing a union.
  • Local Autonomy: Each Teamsters local union operates with its own specific bylaws and initiation fees, so specific details may vary depending on your location and industry.
