How to File a Grievance
Know your rights — act quickly
01
Contact Your Shop Steward or BA
As soon as an issue arises, contact your Steward or BA. Time limits apply — most agreements require filing within 10–15 days of the incident.
02
Document & File the Grievance
You and/or your Steward or BA will document the facts, identify the article(s) violated, and formally file the grievance. You'll receive a secure PIN to track your file online.
03
Track & Respond
Use your PIN at the Grievance Portal to monitor progress, review management's response, and communicate your decision to accept or escalate.
Time limits are strict. Most collective agreements require a grievance to be filed within 10–15 days of the incident or the date you became aware of it. Contact the office immediately at (902) 445-5301 if you're unsure.
The Grievance Process
What to expect after you file
Step 1 — Filed
Your grievance is received and assigned to your Business Agent for review. You receive a file number and secure PIN.
Step 2 — Dispatched to Management
Your BA formally presents the grievance to the employer. Management has a set number of days to respond under your collective agreement.
Step 2 — Management Response
Management submits their official response. You'll be notified by email and can review it through the Grievance Portal using your PIN.
Step 2 — Your Decision
You review the response and decide to accept it (closing the file) or reject it and escalate to Step 3.
Step 3 — BA Escalation
Your BA takes over the file, prepares a formal union response, and engages directly with management to resolve the dispute.
Resolution or Arbitration
If Step 3 does not resolve the matter, the union may proceed to arbitration — an independent third party makes a binding decision.
